2009: A Year In Review

Here we go, start to finish.

I met Dean Whitney and began working for him at GGI Agency. I went from a UNH Class of 2009 Geography Major, to an Online Marketing Professional and Digital Content Producer. Was I qualified? Probably not, but I kicked ass at my job.

I spun my largest party of 1200 people at the Worcester DCU Arena. I convinced most of my DJ friends to use the same DJ software that I use, Serato Scratch Live. I can publicly say that I cannot DJ without my laptop anymore.

I bought my 2nd iPhone the day that I was let go from my first job. I waited 2 hours in line to find out that I didn’t have a job to return to. Three weeks later, I got a job at a little company called HubSpot. I am now on the services team here, solving problems all day.  My new job forced me to move out of New Hampshire, and down to Boston which has been quite an experience.

Shout outs to all of rockstars in my life

New Years Eve 2009-2010!

admin DJ'ing Read on

New Years Eve holds a special place in a DJ’s heart. I have spent the last 5 NYE events in various places in Boston; Gala’s, Nightclubs, and Lounges. I am out and about in Boston again this year.
For all of you who will not be out for NYE, I created a NYE mixtape. Be sure to follow the instructions for this mix, as it is timed exactly for the ball drop.
-When to start this mix!
11:00PM.
The mix has music for 1 hour, while being rudely interrupted by a countdown for the ball drop. This is followed by a 2nd reggaeton and RnB set! Check me out DJ David Gallant AKA Digital Reflex

Marketing For DJ’s

Are you a DJ and visit this website? What happens when you Google your name? Does your MySpace page come up? Many DJ’s, and other musicians made their first attempt at online marketing through the MySpace outlet. While this was a great way to connect with other DJ’s, promote nightclub gigs, and even share music, this is old and spoiled.

Now DJ’s need to learn the ways of online marketing to drive their search traffic to their new home base.   There are many great outlets for DJ’s. Beezo.net is a showcase of DJ mixtapes for many genre’s. This allows a DJ to showcase their content on the web, but does not help increase organic search.

My suggestion to all DJ’s is to create a website(I use WordPress, it is free) to allow yourself to be ‘googled’ and allow your listeners to find you.

Found Footage: My Largest Crowd

admin DJ'ing Read on

Take a look at this video from a few months ago. I was with DJ Scotty P of MegaJam Productions at the Worcester DCU arena.  I was spinning alot of top-40 and dance remixes for the night.

We had an EV X-array soundsystem, with Martin Mac 250 moving lights for the DJ rig, while I am using the Serato Scratch Live DJ Software.

Definition of a Mashup

admin DJ'ing Read on

What is a Mashup? In current vocabulary, a mashup is a combination of any two things that were designed to be independent of each other.

In my world, a mashup is a compilation of at least 2 songs to create something even better than the original mastered version of the song.

A great example of this is “Say It Sweet”, which is a combination of Sweet Dreams and Say It Right.

Notice how you can hear Nelly Furtado
over The Eurythmics
who were never performing during the same generation.  (Shout out to DJ John Faruggio)

Up until inventions like the online shopping cart service CrooklynClan, DJ’s were creating these remixes live and on the fly. This website(the best of a handfull) sells mashup’s for DJ’s to use in their sets. This can accomplish 2 things;

  • Taking a song that is not danceable and distributing a version that is appropriate for the dancefloor.
  • Taking a song and remixing it to make for a more creative DJ set.
